The Mission

The foundation aims at supporting the health care system through financial contributions to medical research facilities, hospitals, and other health care institutions, as well as to individuals who are in need of medical care.

Eligible for funding are measures intended to protect and maintain people's health. The foundation is active in its not-for-profit capacity in Switzerland, particularly in the canton of Tessin, the seat of the foundation. In case of sufficient funds the foundation may also support measures in other countries, provided they meet the foundation's requirements.

As the settlement capital may not be touched, the available funds are limited to the return of the fixed assets.

Upon the initiative of Mrs. Heidi Horten, the foundation board has decided to discontinue the Horten-Awards in favor of funding outstanding larger research projects which the foundation prefers to finance exclusively and in conjunction with the name of the founder Helmut Horten.

Scholarships are granted only as an exception. On principle, other foundations do not receive financial support.

All applications meeting the foundation's requirements are evaluated by the scientific advisory board which then submits them to the board of directors for a final decision. Applications have to be submitted to the foundation's secretarial office by March 15th or September 15th respectively.
