Synergy with Existing Activities in Research

Research in biology and biomedicine in Tessin is not a novel activity. The last ten years have seen remarkable progress in this area, in part at the cantonal institutes for bacteriology but also in certain hospital departments such as oncology, nephrology, and cardiology. Numerous cooperative efforts with university institutes already exist in Switzerland and in other countries where more that fifteen experts in biology and medicine from cantonal institutes teach on a regular basis.

With its work the Institute for Research in Biomedicine intends to promote the further development of already existing facilities both in the laboratory, but also on the clinical level, and thus to strengthen the cantonal hospital system. The Institute will provide, from the onset, opportunities for further education in cooperation with Swiss university institutes and medical departments.

In the future, the Institute might also assume counseling functions for an institute for immune diagnosis which could be established in Tessin. In addition, it would be able to participate in research projects in cooperation with the biotechnological industry in Tessin and vicinity.
