For the first ten years of operation, the Horten
Foundation will make available a sum of 6.5 million Swiss francs.
This long-term financial commitment allows the Horten-Center to
create four additional staff positions. Thus two physicians, one
computer science specialist, and an administrative staff member
are going to work in the Institute in addition to the director.
This team will professionalize the information services and expand
networking with physician who work outside of the Institute. The
two physicians will be trained in Evidence-Based-Medicine (EBM)
at the renowned Center of Review and Dissemination in York, a university
institute with seventy specialists. A physician trained in EBM is
capable, for example, of evaluating studies on new drugs, both in
regard to their practical relevance and reliability as well as to
their success in therapeutic treatments. This procedure permits
a calculation of the statistical risks of a drug's side effects.
